  16. whose prescience and persistence saved from oblivion the work
  17. of a generation of Soviet avant-garde painters; in Athens.
  18. Starting in the 1940s, when authorities were reviling such
  19. artists as Chagall, Kandinsky, Rodchenko and Malevich as
  20. decadent, Costakis managed to acquire a vast collection of
  21. their works. He immigrated to Greece in 1978, leaving most of
  22. his paintings behind in Moscow.
